Youth Turkey Hunt a Success

The Council Grove 9th Annual Spring Turkey Hunt was conducted on Saturday, April 4. This years hunt sought to accommodate area youth ages 16 and younger. Cool and windy weather conditions greeted 16 eager area youngsters the morning of the hunt. Despite the weather, the boys and their guides departed enthusiastically from the warm café where they shared breakfast and discussed strategy before venturing to area turkey habitats near Council Grove. By days end, all of the participants were fortunate to see and hear wild turkeys. Six of the participants harvested a turkey while several others enjoyed encounters with their quarry but were unable to harvest.

The primary goal of this hunt was to enhance outdoor recreation opportunities for area youngsters, and to bring together individuals with an interest in spring turkey hunting. This event was designed to pair young hunters with knowledgeable and experienced adult volunteers, in an effort to initiate or further entrench participants into the enjoyable spring pastime of wild turkey hunting.

All participants enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to receive hands-on hunting instruction, turkey hunting gear, and meals. The hunters truly appreciated the efforts of all involved and volunteers were rewarded with many thanks.

UPDATE: Last weeks hunt turned out pretty good. I took a pair of 25 pounders that had 10 ¾” & 11 ½” beards. I saw lots of birds and had a great time. I saw more hunters this year than I had seen in previous years. It looks like the Kansas NWTF is doing a great job in promoting hunting in Kansas . Keep up the good work.
These pictures were sent in by Rick Pritchard from Little Rock, Arkansas. He is a native of Baldwin, KS and hunts in Kansas every opportunity he gets.
This gobbler ended up being the State Non-Typical Record holder. He shot this one in Spring of 2008 and plans on coming back to try his luck again next week.
